Sand Topping Mix 10 lb, Quikrete No. 1103 Concrete Repair

$1791

About this item

  • High strength mortar. Quikrete says it exceeds the ASTM C387 compressive strength requirement for high strength mortars: typically 3000 psi at 7 days and 5000 psi at 28 days.
  • Many small jobs. Patching and leveling steps, walks and floors, large crack repairs, chimney caps, thick setting beds for ceramic floor tile, and filling the cores of block or brick, per Quikrete.
  • Right size for a patch. The 10 lb bag yields about 0.08 cu ft, so you mix only what a small repair needs.
  • Brick and flagstone setting bed. Quikrete's data sheet uses it dry as a 1 to 2 in bed and joint fill for brick or flagstone patios and walks.
  • Just add water. Mix by hand in a container or in a mortar or barrel mixer.

Why a 10 lb Bag of Sand Topping Mix Earns Its Spot

How to Patch Concrete with Sand Topping Mix

  1. Wear impervious gloves such as nitrile, a mask and eye protection. Remove all broken, loose and unsound concrete and clean the surface; the repair needs a vertical edge of 1/2 in or more.
  2. Saturate the repair area with clean water, leaving no standing water. For a topping 1 to 2 in thick, Quikrete first coats the area with its Premium Concrete Bonding Adhesive (No. 9902) and lets it dry; for toppings under 1 in, it replaces part of the mixing water with its Concrete Acrylic Fortifier (No. 8610).
  3. Mix the 10 lb bag with about 1 pint of water, adding more up to 1-1/2 pints as needed for a workable, plastic consistency with no dry pockets.
  4. Work the mix into the surface with heavy trowel pressure, build up to the thickness you need, then trowel smooth or broom finish once the surface is thumb print hard. Tool a joint over any existing joint.
  5. Cure it: keep it moist for 5 days at 70 F or warmer, or 7 days between 50 F and 70 F, and protect it from freezing for the first 48 hours.

Where It Should Not Be Used

Not for overlays 2 in thick or more, and not for power troweling. Do not apply a curing compound if rain or temperatures below 50 F are expected within 24 hours, or in late fall on surfaces that will see deicers. Wet cement causes severe skin burns and serious eye damage, and breathing the dust over time may cause lung damage or cancer, per Quikrete; read the SDS before use and keep it away from children.

Quick Answers

  • Is this plain sand? No. It is sand with portland cement already blended in; you add only water.
  • How much does one bag cover? Quikrete rates the 10 lb bag at about 0.08 cu ft of mixed material; for larger areas it also makes 40, 60 and 80 lb bags.
  • Can I set brick or flagstone with it? Yes. Quikrete's data sheet uses it as a 1 to 2 in setting bed and to fill 1/2 in joints, then mists the joints and tools them when thumb print hard.
