Why Gardeners Ask for Our Wheat Straw by Name

  • Covers new grass seed. A light layer shades the seed, holds moisture and keeps birds and rain from moving it while it germinates.
  • Mulches beds. Keeps soil moisture even and suppresses weeds around vegetables, strawberries and perennials.
  • Beds small animals. Clean, dry straw for rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens and ducks.
  • Decorates. Bales and loose straw for fall displays, events and craft projects.
  • Four sizes. A 1 lb bag for a planter, 4 lb and 8 lb compressed bags for beds, and the full bale for a lawn.

How to Use Wheat Straw

  1. Seed cover: after seeding and watering, spread straw so about half the soil still shows through; one full bale covers roughly a small front lawn. Leave it in place; it breaks down as the grass fills in.
  2. Mulch: lay 2 to 3 in around plants, keeping it an inch off stems. Top up as it settles.
  3. Bedding: lay a 2 to 4 in layer in the hutch or coop and change it when it gets damp.
  4. Store the unused straw dry and off the ground.

Quick Answers

  • Wheat straw or pine straw? Wheat straw for seed cover and bedding; pine straw for a longer lasting decorative mulch under shrubs and trees.
  • Will it bring weeds? Straw is the stalk, not the seed head, so it carries far fewer seeds than hay. Some wheat may sprout and mows out.
  • Is it treated? No additives.
